Mil-spec 19834 is a military spec engravings standard for adhesive backed foil plates. These military UID tags are adhesive backed foil plates. Mil-dtl 19834C products are used for both internal and external equipment identification and instruction plates. This specification covers adhesive backed metal foil identification or instruction plates, also referred to as identification plates, for use as internal and external equipment identification or instruction.
Mil-Spec 19834 Classifications
- Type I - Aluminum foil, pressure sensitive, easily removable liner
- Type II - Aluminum foil, adhesive-backed solvent-activated film
Mil-Spec 19834 Material Requirements
The mil-dtl 19834C adhesive backed foil plates must be made of a high-grade aluminum alloy and the adhesive must have a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side that is protected by a film cover.
Mil-Spec 19834 Design & Dimensional Requirements
Standard Dimensions - Identification plate dimensions for adhesive backed foil plates will depend on the size of the unit on which the identification plate is to be placed. The thickness for all adhesive backed identification plates must be within .003 inch ± .0005 inch not including the backing material.
Marking - Identification plate marking information for adhesive backed foil plates must be in accordance with the individual contract or order or as approved by the command or agency concerned.
Radius of Corners – Adhesive backed foil plates can only have corners rounded to a maximum radius of .125 inch.
Mil-Spec 19834 Temperature Range
Mil-dtl 19834C adhesive backed foil plates are required to withstand temperature extremes of -55ºC and +105ºC without deleterious effects. There also cannot be any signs of looseness, warping, corrosion, impairment of legibility, discoloration or any other indications of damage within the mil-dtl 19834C adhesive backed foil plates. Looseness attributed to deterioration of paint film will not be a cause for adhesive backed foil plate rejection.
Mil-Spec 19834 Finish
The required finish for the mil-dtl 19834C adhesive backed foil plates must be such that the identification plates shall conform to the requirements of this specification. If surfaces are anodized, they must be anodized in accordance with type I or type II of MIL-A-8625 before the adhesive is applied. The anodizing of the edge surfaces or surface under the adhesive of identification plates is optional. Whether anodized or not, the nameplate must conform to abrasion test requirements.
Mil-Spec 19834 Workmanship
The mil-dtl 19834C adhesive backed foil plates must meet the design and dimensional requirements of this specification. All lines, numerals, and letters of finished adhesive backed foil plates must be sharp and clear. All mil-dtl 19834C colors must be uniform. The adhesive backed foil plates must also have smooth edges and be free of blisters, cracks, sharp corners, foreign matter or any other indications of defects.
